I remember when I first saw the commercials for Merlin. I was just passing by going about my life when I noticed a this young man with peculiar features getting into some sort of trouble because he wasn't allowed to use his magic. I knew instantly that I wanted to see this show but for some reason I never seemed to catch the airing.

This was back before shows were on the interwebs. You had to sit in front of the bubble TV at a specific time to watch shows. Maybe if you were lucky, you'd catch the re-run. I was often unlucky and stuck at work, but years later when BBC released the DVD's I managed to borrow the set from a friend. I'm so glad I did because I binged the whole series in a matter of days. So addicting!

Merlin is still my favourite magic user of all time even if Harry Potter is still the prominent fandom internationally. The characters of the Merlin cast will always have a special place in my heart. From Merlin's comical interactions with Arthur, to the endearing relationships he has with those he is closest to. The show chronicles his transition from lost gifted boy to an accomplished and powerful sorcerer. If you know the story of Arthur, then you know the tragic end but Merlin aka Emrys will always live on immortalized by story.

The Artwork...

When I finished this piece I was disappointed in a few things. The facial proportions were off. My white Posca pen exploded leaving an irreparable white glob by the sword. To top it off, my little one left her mark with blue ink pen. As disappointing as all that was, I was proud of the colouring and ink work.

Every time a do a portrait, I learn more about proportions. I learn more about colouring. I learn more about the line weight of my ink. If I had to choose one thing that I would do differently, other than redraw his face, it would be to use a different toned paper. For me, anyway, the sword disappears with the grey background. Overall, I'm still quite happy with the end result.

We're almost into June! Holy quacks! This year is flying by. Making all of this art is blurring the days together!
