If you've been keeping up with my blog, I might've mentioned that I discovered it was Alien Day April 26 when I was searching through my kiddo's school agenda. I had planned to do some sort of fan art for this day, but I instead spent the time in bed with a sinus cold.
I missed out on a few blog posts and my Camp Nanowrimo sort of went out the window. Even when Nanowrimo ends I always end up continuing my story journey. Since I'm a slow writer, I happen to be an all year round wrimo!

When Alien day came around, I was bummed that I didn't have the energy to do what I planned, and it wasn't until earlier this week I started to feel better. So, to make up for my lack of work the previous week, I decided to work on a pencil coloured portrait of Sigourney Weaver.
To be honest, when I was sketching this lovely lady I got so frustrated with my lack of skill. I could not nail the proportions of her unique jaw, those thing lips, and those beautiful curls were the height of my struggle. Ugh!
I persevered and thought I would just leave my artwork at the sketch, but then I left it alone for a day. When I came back to it, I decided to try some pencil crayons. I had no vision in mind. I only felt the need to explore. What surprised me most about this piece was the amount of carefree fun I had. I normally don't like doing coloured pencil work because I'm an impatient artist but for some reason, I really had fun this time. Coloured pencils take a long time to do because of the amount of layers that are needed to create a bold and vibrant look. My hand hurt with all of the burnishing I had to do.
I even did something I thought I'd never do. I worked in public. When I took the kiddo to the park, I brought my work with me. Everything was going well. People left me alone and I was still able to watch the little one. A great day in the warm sun. Then when we left the park to pick up my eldest daughter, we ended up at the school earlier than expected. Again, I setup and got back to work. I really wanted to finish my work before Friday so I could post it here.
As I worked, I suddenly heard the many footsteps of students approaching. They seemed to be returning to the school from a trip and they were about to walk past me. Only they didn't. Every single student stopped to gawk at my work. Awe sounded and their expressions had me turning red. I've never blushed so much in my life. It was a fascinating experience and I truly hope that I inspired someone to work hard on their creative passion someday.
So, there you have it. My Sigourney Weaver. I don't think it looks like her but at least I never gave up. I grew a lot as an artist with this piece and I'm looking forward to working on more coloured pencil portraits in the future.

Hey you! Thank you for taking the time to check out my blog! I hope you enjoy the work I've put into my posts. The one thing I'm looking forward to with this blog is looking back at all of my growth. It feels like a creative diary here so stay tuned for more content!
Have a wonderful weekend and I'll see you next week! Unless....life.... yeah....
